Acetyls L-Carnitine

MECHANISM OF ACTION AND LITERATURE

Research on Acetyl L-Carnitine suggests that its activity may be related to cholinergic neural transmission and its ability to enhance neuronal metabolism in mitochondria. While some researchers attribute Acetyl L-Carnitine's cholinergic effects to the blocking of postsynaptic inhibitory potentials, others propose direct synaptic stimulation. Based on enhanced cellular energy in mitochondria, human studies show that Acetyl L-Carnitine stabilizes cell membrane fluidity through the regulation of sphingomyelin levels and prevents excessive neuronal degeneration by providing a substrate reservoir for cellular energy production.

Acetyl L-Carnitine has also been shown to enhance hippocampal binding of glucocorticoids and nerve growth factor, reduce oxidative stress, and inhibit excitotoxicity in brain tissue and CSF. These effects contribute to preventing cell death and ischemia-induced neuronal damage. Regarding its effects on the peripheral nervous system, the benefits of Acetyl L-Carnitine supplementation in patients with peripheral neuropathy are attributed to its antioxidant, antiapoptotic, and analgesic activity, as well as its role in nerve regeneration and protection.
